EM on Tour – Erasmus Sport

From 4 to 7 June, the EM editorial staff will be on tour and this time at Erasmus Sport. The editorial staff resides in the sports building on the Woudestein campus all week looking for the best sports stories. We portray employees, get acquainted with top sporters and, above all, make many stories about sports students and employees.

Reporter Ferayed Hok – in his own words ‘not the most fanatical athlete’ – explores the timetable at Erasmus Sport. In episode 2: Ferayed other Brazilian Jiu jitsu.

They stand out in the sports café on the campus: Kees and Jos, the seventy-something guys who come to exercise twice a week at Erasmus Sport. “We do not really like it.”

Sports reporter Byron Dolon hit the pool with members of the Ragnar water polo team for an hour-long session of throwing balls while staying afloat in the water.

The tuna salad pistolet is the most popular item in the sports canteen, followed by the toasted sandwich. The favoured drink of visitors to Erasmus Sport is beer.

Do you use the communal showers after working out or are you the type who will wait for his/her own cubicle to become available?

He has been teaching Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) at Erasmus Sport for three years now.

In the new sports centre, everyone will have their own shower cubicle. Associations will also have more space to complete their competition matches.

International students enjoy hanging out at Erasmus Sport. Not just for the exercise, but also – according to the students themselves – to socialise.

More students and staff opt to start the day with a visit to Erasmus Sport. A quick impression of the gym early in the morning.

Identical twins Anne en Myke van de Wiel sport together on top-level. And they both study at Erasmus University, one Psychology, the other Sociology. The sisters are inseparable, but once on the track they are each other’s rivals.

The tough-looking, studenty lion who serves as Erasmus Sport’s symbol has been missing for a year.

Ton de Raad, 64, and his sons Eri, 29, and Zev, 27, all work at Erasmus Sport. Ton came to the Woudestein Campus in 1980, in his capacity as a part-time judo teacher.

Goalkeeping when it comes to futsal is not that easy, according to sports reporter Byron Dolon. “This is not boxing! I wasn’t expecting another hit to the face.”

The Rotterdam Students’ Sailing Club (RSZV) won the race it organised itself, held on Kralingse Plas Lake, beating Delft’s Broach team in the final.

Antoinette Laan (VVD) is member of the House of Representatives (VVD) and Chair of Erasmus Sport: ‘Exercise is an important part of studying at this university.’

Since 2012, the number of sport passes sold nearly tripled.

Conny Knoppert, 51, works at Erasmus Sport six hours per week, teaching aerobics, body toning (both of which feature abs, butt and thighs exercises) and power pump classes.
