Educational activities have largely resumed at Erasmus MC

Gepubliceerd op:

This Wednesday, educational activities were resumed at Erasmus MC. Most classes have been relocated to other rooms or sites, as most locations in the learning centre are still unusable. Lectures for large groups are taking place online. This has been confirmed by programme director Janneke van der Woude, and all students have been informed.

The teaching of medicine also resumed at Erasmus MC on Wednesday. No lectures are being given yet in building Gk, where lecturer and GP Jurgen Damen was shot and killed last Thursday. Students normally have practicals in this building. Lectures and tutorials are taught at the Erasmus MC learning centre.

Building Gk also has offices, including those of the communications and ICT departments. These staff members are working in their own offices again.

A spokesperson has stated that students can enter building Gk in groups under the supervision of professionals with expertise in mental health. The university and Erasmus MC are also providing other forms of support in coping with the impact of the shooting and the fire that was set in the learning centre. Many students and employees witnessed the incident, were evacuated or found themselves trapped inside the building, fearing for their lives. Psychological support is being made available by the university and Victim Support Netherlands.

Minute of silence

On 5 October, a minute of silence will be observed at 2.30 am at Erasmus MC and on Woudestein campus. A commemorative meeting will be held in the hospital’s central foyer, but there will be no central meeting at the campus.
