Residence requirements for European students
All international students from the EU, Switzerland or Suriname have to make sure to register themselves at the Municipal Personal Records Database before September 30th, or else they have to pay a higher tuition fee!
This amount of money can get as high as € 13.500: reason enough to register on time. This new rule has been introduced this academic year and is applicable to all students who pay the lowest tuition fee, but do not have a Dutch passport.
A whole lotta money
With an EU passport, you generally have the benefit of paying the lowest tuition fee, called the statutory tuition fee, which is € 1.713 for the academic year 2011-2012. When you don’t register yourself at the GBA on time, you will have to pay a lot more. For example, if you are a student from Germany and follow a bachelor course at RSM, you will have to pay € 7.950 if you are not registered.
The system
Like all Dutch universities, EUR works with a system of two kinds of tuition fees: one statutory tuition fee and three institute tuition fees for students for whom the statutory tuition fee is not applicable. The statutory tuition fee is the lowest, but only students with a Dutch, EU/EER, Swiss or Surinamese nationality can benefit from this lower fee. To get an overview of all the different tuition fees for each faculty, check out the ESSC website.
Problems?
Did this cause any trouble for new students? ‘Not yet,’ says Shirley Accord of the IBA office, ‘as we have warned the students on time, and advised them to register at the City Hall as soon as possible after arrival. However, we’re only at the beginning of September and new students are still arriving in Rotterdam, so we might receive some questions before the deadline.’
If you still have any questions about the residence requirements, check the website or contact your faculty office. IS
