University works with Ministry of Defence: ‘I hope what they do is pro human rights’
Dutch universities want to work more closely with the Ministry of Defence. Research of this kind is already taking place at Erasmus University. The Student Union is strongly opposed to the collaboration, but for many students, it mostly comes as a surprise.
“I didn’t expect the university to get involved with the military”, says Emily, a Business Administration student. At the same time, she admits that it is currently difficult to avoid collaboration. Her fellow student Lion is surprised by the plan, but thinks working together could be useful. “If scientists can contribute to our national security in this way, then I think that’s a good thing.”
Vladimir, a master’s student in Supply Chain Management, is concerned about the development. He believes military research does not belong at a university: “That’s what military institutes are for.”
Niharica, a student of Econometrics and Economics, is positive about the collaboration. However, she thinks the plans sound somewhat frightening. “I hope what they do pro human rights.” She ends the conversation with a clear message: “I don’t want war.”
