In the Keuzegids Universiteiten 2026, the Open University receives its highest score in years. Last time, the Limburg institution, which specialises in distance learning, was on the same level as Wageningen University.

The Keuzegids makes a separate ranking for ‘broad universities’. These are institutions that offer a programme in almost every field. Utrecht University performs best in this category. That has been the case for years.

Among the broad institutions, only the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam have switched places. The UvA climbs from the bottom thanks to a small rise, and the VU takes over that place.

Method

The Keuzegids is based on the National Student Survey. In it, 91 thousand research university students (about one in four) gave their views on the content of their programme, the lecturers, the exams, the atmosphere and the preparation for their career. The Keuzegids also takes into account how many students progress to the second year and how many finish their degree within four years.
