Erasmus MC selects Clifton Mahangoe’s artwork as memorial monument
To commemorate the attack of 28 September 2023, artist Clifton Mahangoe is creating a memorial monument. A special committee selected the piece Geometry of Unity, which will be unveiled in September 2026.

“The monument is a place for contemplation, peace, and reflection. Here, you can pause to reflect on the events of 28 September, but also spend time alone with your own thoughts”, said Lydia Bogtstra of Erasmus MC’s art committee. The monument will be located near the exit towards the Museumpark, which is also close the part of the Education Centre where a fire broke out during the attack.
On 28 September 2023, a shooting and arson attack took place at Erasmus MC. Lecturer Jurgen Damen lost his life. Earlier that day, then-medical student Fouad L., who is on trial for the crimes, had shot and killed his neighbour and her daughter. The trial against L. is set to begin on Monday, 27 January.
Metal, glass, and rock crystal
The artwork will consist of three white circles made of metal, glass, and rock crystal, hanging one below the other. The circles will remain stationary, explained Mahangoe. “The light changes. The position of the sun changes, as does its intensity. The changing light – both natural and artificial in the space – causes reflections on the glass and rock crystal, making the piece appear different depending on the time of day.” This symbolises the ever-changing nature of life. The white colour represents light in moments of darkness.
Bogtstra sees additional symbolism in the piece: vulnerability, strength, and connectedness. “We hope the monument will become a place where people can commemorate and remember, but also recharge and feel a sense of connection.” Beneath the three circles, a bench will be installed. “The idea is that people can sit quietly by the monument if they wish”, said vice dean of education Maarten Frens about last year’s memorial gathering. “We’re commemorating the entire wave of violence that struck Erasmus MC on 28 September.”
In the Education Centre, one floor up from where the monument will be installed, restoration work is still underway. These repairs are expected to be completed by the summer.
