University to take legal action against asbestos company

Erasmus University will take legal action against the asbestos company that was initially going to handle the asbestos removal of the air bridge at the K.P. van der Mandele square. The company stopped its work halfway through the removal due to unknown reasons and left the site in a contaminated state.

Because of the legal process, the university is unwilling to say which company it concerns and why it stopped with the asbestos removal. The company AOR based in Ridderkerk took over the removal on July 12 and discovered asbestos at three locations in the immediate vicinity of the footbridge. At one of these locations the safety standard was violated. On July 14 the square was closed off to the public and the asbestos was removed.

Since the incident the air around the footbridge has been constantly monitored in six different places. It was found that the air is safe to breathe. After the weekend, the square and the exits of the buildings on the square will probably be opened again.
