Edward Snowden for rector

Edward Snowden is the new rector of the University of Glasgow. The American whistleblower may fulfill the honorable position for three years.

The rector is nominated and elected by students. Snowden won yesterday with a wide majority of the votes. He beat the Scottish former cyclist Graeme Obree, the author Alan Bissett and preacher Kelvin Holdsworth. Student Chris Cassells, who led the campaign for Snowden, is “delighted”.



Honorary position


The headship at the University of Glasgow is an honorary position. Snowden finds himself in illustrious company: before, the position has been filled by, among others, Winnie Mandela. Snowden’s predecessor is Charles Kennedy, former leader of the British Liberal Democrats. In a press release he wishes his successor “all the best”.



Snowden, who at the moment resides in Russia, tells the British newspaper The Guardian that he is ‘honored’ with his appointment. HOP
