Eurekaweek 2018

Figures from various sources including Statistics Netherlands reveal that almost one in five students is an excessive drinker. While copious amounts of beer are once again flowing during Eurekaweek, a physician and a prevention worker – both professionally involved in the prevention and treatment of excessive alcohol consumption among young people – are advocating for a cultural shift among students. Their message: alcohol should no longer be seen as a condition for enjoying social interactions.

This year marks the first time English is the official (and only) language of instruction during the Eurekaweek. It is clear that Erasmus University’s campus is becoming more international. So what are the organisers focusing on? On the differences, or rather on diversity?

Delft University of Technology’s first-year students will attempt to break the vegan-kebab-eating world record this week. Wageningen University’s induction week is run completely on green electricity, generated by the university’s own collection of wind mills. In short, sustainability is a big thing at Dutch universities, and features prominently in the induction weeks.

Oh, the benefits of being young. After a night of partying at the infamous Maassilo, the first year students of group 228 still looked fresh-faced and clear-eyed Tuesday morning.

The National Student Union (LSVb) has issued a warning stating that on average, students in the Netherlands are overcharged more than €100 per month for their rent. In Rotterdam, the average student pays almost €110 more than his or her room is worth.

Preparations

Up to and including 26 August, no metro trains will ride on the route between Wilhelminaplein and Zuidplein due to maintenance work around the Rijnhaven metro station. This is very inconvenient for all Eurekaweek participants who have to go to the enrollment and the opening ceremony in Ahoy on Monday morning. However, in collaboration with RET, the Eurekaweek committee has come up with a solution: the Eureka Express, a special metro train that will bring all participants to the ceremony and back.

Due to incidents during last year’s hazing, the RSC / RVSV student corps was excluded from participating in the Eurekaweek this year. So you will not see them at the official opening in Ahoy, for example. They are also not allowed to promote themselves during activities of the Eurekaweek. They do organize an alternative themselves, the Entreeweek.

The opening this year is not in De Doelen, as it is traditionally, but in the much bigger venue Ahoy. The Eurekaweek is actually bigger than ever. While the number of participants has been growing slowly by about 100 per year, now there is room for 800 more first-year students than last year.
