The Laurenskerk gradually fills with new first years and their guides for the start of The Night of The Songs. Like last year, the medieval church in the centre of Rotterdam is the venue for the highlight of the week.

Normally we hear organ music reverberating through the Laurenskerk, but at the close of Eurekaweek it’s time for a mix of a familiar songs and artists. From De Dijk to Britney Spears and from Justin Bieber to De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig: there’s a bit of everything.

The Delft student cover band De Klittenband plays brilliantly throughout the evening. Guitarist Jeroen Swart and bassist Freek Akkerman are clearly enjoying themselves during their rendition of André Hazes’s classic ‘Bloed, Zweet & Tranen’.

And alongside the band members, the Eurekaweek participants are also having a great time. The up-and-coming EUR students sing themselves hoarse to ‘Bloed, Zweet & Tranen’, or ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’. And sweat was present in abundance in the sweltering Laurenskerk.

Drummer Martijn Stevens emerges from behind his drum kit as a young version of André Hazes. And he does a pretty fair imitation too.

The guides enjoy the entertainment in the Laurenskerk too. After a long, hard week, they lead their groups for the last time.

Some of the participants enjoy themselves so much that they seem to have gone into a trance.
