No free travel with student travel week pass on Liberation Day

Gepubliceerd op:

Liberation Day falls on a Tuesday this year, but for the student travel product, the fifth of May is not considered a weekday. Students need to bear this in mind if they want to use their week or weekend pass.

Universities and universities of applied sciences are closed on Liberation Day, as it is an official public holiday. Students therefore have plenty of time to go to a liberation festival.

If they want to travel there by public transport, they should take note: a weekly pass only gives a discount, while they can travel for free if they have a weekend subscription.

What counts as a public holiday?

On the website of student finance body DUO, it only states that students receive a discount on public holidays with a week subscription (Monday to Friday) and can travel for free with a weekend subscription. But what counts as a public holiday?

Everyone knows how it works with Christmas and Easter, but other holidays can cause doubt. Last month, all students were able to travel for free on Good Friday, regardless of their public transport subscription.

But that is the only exception. Next week Thursday 14 May, for example, is Ascension Day. That is an official public holiday, so with a weekly public transport pass students only receive a discount.

Last week was King’s Day and that was also a public holiday. If students took the bus to the market, they therefore had to pay with their week pass and could travel for free with their weekend pass. The same applies tomorrow on Liberation Day.
