Who is your favourite female professor? ‘There should be more women in professor roles’

Gepubliceerd op:

Erasmus University’s number of female full professors is still below the national average, at 26.7 per cent. This raises concerns for both the university and the students. For International Women’s Day this Sunday, students talk about their favourite female lecturer.

Some struggle to name their favourite female lecturer. Quite a few could not even come up with one.

Students Ashley and Alix mentioned Mirjam Tuk (associate professor of marketing), who teaches Business Simulation for IBA. She was ‘very kind and helpful’ during class and group assignments. Sanne Struijk (professor of Penal Law) is first-year Tax Law student Sarah’s favourite: “Because she always explains very enthusiastically, and she has a lot of passion for the subject.” Additionally, Arya, a master’s student studying Econometrics, brought up Ece Karakoyun (assistant professor in Econometrics) from Stochastic Modes and Inventory Control. “Because she’s the only female professor I had in this university.”

‘Go women!’

The university is aiming to have 40 per cent of the full professors to be women by 2030. “That’s amazing, I wish it were 50, but you have to be a little realistic”, Said Mihai, a second-year IBCoM student. Alix added: “Go women, I think there should be more women in professor roles.” Students are also critical of the 40 per cent target. “It’s a good initiative, but there will still be a gap because it’s going to be 40 against 60”, said Pietro, a third-year IBACS student.

“If you look at statistics nowadays, most students are women, so why are we also not in the power positions within those institutions?”, wondered Kim, a third-year Psychology student.

Students are also critical of the 40 per cent target.
I am critical, because this is discrimination. Discrimination is horrible.

If w apply the same logic: shouldn’t we more critical to this statistics? Shouldn’t there be a equal amount of female and male students? 50/50?

If there are more woman in the classroom, then there will be more female professors eventually.
Just be patient. No need to (“positive”) discriminate.
