‘A university, where critical thinking is central, must allow itself to be critically followed’ – this is why we need journalism (episode 2)
At a university, students learn to think critically and academics are paid to do so. And therefore a university must also allow itself to be critically followed, says EM editor-in-chief Wieneke Gunneweg.
After all, the university is a democracy, with a system similar to that of the municipal council. With parties, elections, a University Council and an Executive Board. And a healthy democracy requires well-informed people, so also an independent news outlet.
In this episode we look at the emergence of university publications, zoom in on the history of Erasmus Magazine and learn why a university needs an independent news platform.
