‘A university, where critical thinking is central, must allow itself to be critically followed’ – this is why we need journalism (episode 2)
At a university, students learn to think critically and academics are paid to do so. And therefore a university must also allow itself to be critically followed, says EM editor-in-chief Wieneke Gunneweg.
After all, the university is a democracy, with a system similar to that of the municipal council. With parties, elections, a University Council and an Executive Board. And a healthy democracy requires well-informed people, so also an independent news outlet.
In this episode we look at the emergence of university publications, zoom in on the history of Erasmus Magazine and learn why a university needs an independent news platform.
In this series EM examines the role of journalism within the university. Because why are independent media in the academic world, an environment where knowledge, power, politics and large flows of money come together, important?
