Students not keen to do a board year: ‘We have to get every single credit possible’
Student associations are struggling to find committee and board members. One of the reasons: many students are worried about study delay and work pressure. “We have a lot of work in the first year, I don’t think students have the time to join a board”, one of them said.
“It’s really sad to see that less people want to do a board year or committee work”, says a student who is active for trading association B&R Beurs, faculty association STAR, and the STAR Management Week. “Although a board year is a commitment, it’s a really big opportunity to learn and grow.
The fear of study delay is one of the main reasons for not applying for a board year. “It wouldn’t be really possible for me because of my studies. It already takes really long, and it will take even longer”, a student who is active as a committee member at B&R Beurs. Another student thinks a board year is too much work. “We already have a lot of work in the first year, I don’t think students have the time to join a board.”
A solution that students from the University Council proposed is awarding study points for board years. But for some students, lowering the binding study advice could already make a difference. “For our course, we have to get every single credit possible”, a first-year student says. “If that would be lowered by five or ten credits, maybe we would have more time.”
