Sex on campus: ‘Why not, if it helps with exam stress?’
Now that the G building is closing at the end of this year, a reportedly beloved hotspot for blowing off some steam between classes is disappearing as well. “I’ve heard people having sex in the study room next to me.”
The fourth floor of Polak, the toilets in Sanders or a study room on the third floor of G – many students have heard stories, directly or indirectly, of people secretly having sex on campus.
“The G building is a good spot because it’s deserted and there are no classes there”, says a student who has also heard the stories. A German student confirms this: “A friend of ours had sex in the G building during the first week of the year”, he says, laughing outside the Spar. The friend in question is standing a little further away and can hardly contain his laughter either. He doesn’t want to be interviewed, but allows his friends to tell the story. The German student continues: “We were really shocked when he told us.” Another classmate adds: “And also very proud.”
“I think I once heard people having sex in the study room next to me”, the German student goes on. During a study session in the G building, he heard some very strange and rhythmic noises coming from the room next door. “But I didn’t check. I wanted to give them some privacy.”
Divided opinions
“I think it’s disgusting”, says another student, sitting on a bench outside the Theil building, enjoying a bit of sunshine. She too knows stories of students having sex on university grounds. “I don’t understand why you’d do something like that”, she adds. A student taking a break by the campus pond agrees: “Aren’t there plenty of other places?”
Other students take a less negative view of sex on campus. “People should do whatever they want”, jokes a student on Erasmus Plaza. A master’s student outside the Spar adds: “If you want a short break from your exam stress, why not?”
