Students shop for free in the Swap Shop on campus
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, that’s what the Swap Shop is in a nutshell. The pop-up shop in the Erasmus Food Lab, ground floor of the Mandeville building, is organised by the International Office, and aims to help international students get necessities for their stay here. They can stop by and pick up whatever stuff they need, for free.
The Swap Shop has it all, from cups, pans, blankets, and grilled cheese makers to bikes. “I put a bike here in the swap shop, and within 5 minutes it was gone”, said Karen de Man from the International Office. One of the students with a full shopping bag shows her new picture frame: “I want to put a picture of me and my boyfriend in it.”
Everything is free. The International Office gets donations from departing students, faculty members, and their friends or family. A student who donated stuff to the Swap Shop finds joy in helping their fellow students. “I like the idea of doing this for new students who are arriving here, so they can set up their home.”
The Swap Shop is still accepting donations until 23 September, and you can still shop until approximately 30 September. But it could close earlier depending on the demand.
