Rotterdam through the eyes of the newcomers: ‘It’s really messy’
Monday was the first day of Eureakaweek 2025, and new first-year students from all around gathered at Ahoy Rotterdam for the opening ceremony. For many of them, Rotterdam is completely new. So why did they come here?
Many students’ first thought was to mention the architecture. “It’s very impressive. I saw things I’ve never seen before,” said one newcomer. “How big and full of things it is”, a girl said. “It’s really messy but in a good way. There are a lot of things to discover: the people, just the student life in general…”
Others mentioned the hidden gems in the city they had discovered. “I like the harbour. You can find some hidden places to drink some beers.” A member of the rugby association, who is already a student, backed up this claim: “You also have some spots which you would never even expect there to be.”
