On Thursday, the Kring – the association of editors-in-chief of higher education media – presented its annual awards for the best journalistic productions. The awards were handed out during the Kring conference. This year, there were three categories: photo, column and feature.
The award for best feature was won by Annebelle de Bruijn and Marjolein van der Veldt of Delta for their investigation ‘Victims of social insecurity always come off worst at TU Delft’.
According to the jury, ‘the narrators didn’t shy away from guiding the reader through a world of fear ‘. In their article, the authors highlighted the social insecurity faced by staff at the university and showed how difficult it is for victims to speak out.
Column and photo
The column category was won by Adriaan Duiveman of Vox (the magazine of Radboud University) for his piece on ‘contrarian academics’. According to the jury, Duiveman writes ‘with precision and a touch of wit”, and ‘in just a few hundred words, he deftly dismantles overzealous critics of woke culture’.
For the first time this year, attendees of the Kring conference were also able to vote for the best photo. The prize went to Romain Beker, photographer for Folia (of the University of Amsterdam). In March, he captured an image of a pro-Israeli UvA alumnus and a pro-Palestinian protester, during a moment when around forty UvA alumni returned their diplomas in protest against the university’s policy on Israel.
