For the first time in years, Nibud has calculated the ‘purchasing power’ of students, as it does for other households. They cut back considerably.
In 2023-24, students received a basic grant again, which was also temporarily increased by 164 euros per month for those living away from home due to rising inflation. Next year, this purchasing power measure will disappear again.
The supplementary grant, care allowance and wages for side jobs will go up slightly, but this does not outweigh the disappearance of the inflation allowance.
Outrageous
The National Union of Students calls it ‘scandalous and unacceptable’ and the Interstedelijk Studenten Overleg warns that a new ‘unlucky generation’ is in danger of emerging. “Delete the long-study fine and increase the basic grant so that students can study free of financial worries.”
