Dutch Research Council increases grants
Amid rising prices and personnel costs, the Dutch Research Council (NWO) has increased its Veni and Vidi grants for leading researchers. The change is taking effect immediately, meaning it will also apply to current application rounds.

Academia had been calling for higher research grants for some time, citing difficulties covering operating costs, especially since university salaries were raised by 9 percent in August. Acknowledging the problem, NWO has now decided to improve the grants’ “alignment with operating expenses”, using additional funding from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
The Veni grant is being raised from a maximum of 280,000 to 320,000 euros, and the Vidi grant will increase from 800,000 to 850,000 euros. Because the Vici grant is already more generous, an increase is less urgent there, according to NWO – the maximum amount will remain 1.5 million euros.
