From all the nominations, the jury chose seven EUR students to be considered for the title of Student of the Year: Alex Huang, Amran Mahamed, Hassnae Boubrik, Pim den Boon, Renee de Groot, and Süheyl Uyar and Tevfik Çiçek.
Dedicating yourself to furthering the interests of medical students means working toward a better healthcare system. It sounds grandiose, but Pim den Boon saw an opportunity to ‘contribute’. The sixth-year medical student hopes that future doctors will learn to care for others as well as for themselves.
From giving guidance to the Somali community to helping organise multiple charity enterprises, Amran always gives others a helping hand. “Everyone should get the same chances.” Her friend describes her as ‘the embodiment of helpfulness’, due to her many selfless ventures.
Chair Renee de Groot would like nothing better than to see all members and colleagues at her football club Antibarbari being comfortable in their own skin. To achieve this, she has arranged the appointment of a confidential adviser at the club and launched a well-being plan.
Süheyl and Tevfik immediately took action when a series of heavy earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria. Now, they are sharing a single nomination for student of the year. Although the two medical students are in the final phase of their medical internships, they didn’t know each other until they went to Turkey in February to help victims of the earthquakes.
Third-year Medicine Hassnae Boubrik sits on the faculty council and is a mentor to fellow students. She wants to be the role model for others that she did not have herself. “I want people to see me and say, ‘If she is Moroccan and she has achieved this, I can do it too.'”
Driven by his past, encounters with inequality, and sentimental family memorabilia, Student of the Year finalist Yu-Cheng (Alex) Huang wants to improve the inclusion and belonging of students and staff. “I just want to be able to help make people feel at home as much as possible.”
The ballot boxes are closed
Why did we ask for your e-mail address? That helped us to keep an eye on whether voting was done fairly. Another round of voting will take place on 31 May, during the live show. You can sign up here to be part of that. The five judges will also cast a vote. The result of these voting rounds will be known on the 31st of May, when we will know who the next Student of the Year is.
