Utrecht University closes its doors after a possible terrorist act

Gepubliceerd op:

The university in Utrecht will keep its doors closed after the shooting in a tram in Utrecht on Monday morning. Students and staff at the university are taken care of. The municipality of Utrecht has called all inhabitants of the city to stay indoors. “We cannot exclude the possibility of new incidents,” the municipality communicated via Twitter.

Emergency workers at Utrecht University guard the entrances to the buildings and advise attendees to stay inside. People can still enter the university buildings, but only after identification.

The atmosphere at Utrecht University would be ‘reserved but curious’, writes Utrecht university medium DUB. The crisis protocol is now being enforced by the university. Buildings are under extra supervision. Students, teachers and guests are advised to stay indoors. Exams and classes will still take place for students already present. Students who can’t make it to the exams, can make an appeal to the examination board to get a resit.

Hogeschool Utrecht has also closed its doors, reports college medium Trajectum.

Much is still unclear about the causes of the possible terrorist act in a tram on Kanaleneiland. At least one perpetrator is currently on the run, said National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg at a press conference. Several people are said to have been injured in the tram. The threat level for the province of Utrecht has been raised to the highest level.
