Former president Erasmus Sport honoured

Daniël Sikkens (l) with Bart Straatman, member of the Executive Board.
Recently, Daniël Sikkens resigned as president after nearly three decades. During the 28 years that he was president of Erasmus Sport, student sport became increasingly popular. Unfortunately for Sikkens, he had just left when the milestone of ten thousand members was reached. One of the highlights of his presidency was bringing the European University Games to Rotterdam in 2014. More than 3000 students from 43 countries took part in these games.
Long term voluntary work
Last Thursday, his farewell party took place in the Sportgebouw. Sikkens was celebrated by all and sundry, live and in video messages. Kicking off was alderman Hugo de Jonge, who praised his achievements and then presented Sikkens with the Erasmus pin. All this ‘for his motivated and long term voluntary work for the Erasmus Sport Foundation and thus for Rotterdam society’, according to the municipality.

Sikkens christens the boat named after him.
Sikkens then received an award from the university with more praise, including from his successor Antoinette Laan. But perhaps the best moment of the celebration was when he christened the rowing boat named after him: the only genuine D.E. Sikkens boat.
