Tinbergen stripped of spikes, new look is taking shape

The new appearance of the Tinbergen building is taking shape. The glass rooftop structure has been constructed and the last support beams were removed last week, giving the facade a sleek look again. EM photographer Daan Stam was allowed to take a look at the operation.

The steel beams, also known as ‘spikes’, on the facade were needed for the construction of the new glass rooftop structure of the Tinbergen building. Last week the spikes were removed one by one and lowered with a crane.

The beams are carried across the campus as they are lowered. To minimise the risk of damage or injury should a beam come loose, the buildings on the ground are temporarily not in use.

The Tinbergen building almost completely stripped of the ‘spikes’ along the edge of the new glass structure. The exterior is almost finished, inside there is still a lot to be done, but completion is still scheduled for summer 2027.
