Come for the events, stay for the people. Students join associations despite study pressure
Many students sign up for associations around this time of year. Balancing study pressure and fun events proves difficult, however. “It’s very possible if you balance your time right. Don’t be scared of the sixty study credits and go to your lectures!”, one student recommends.
First-year student Kitara has already signed up for two student organisations: stock trading association B&R Beurs and the SCP student investment fund, in order to gain more experience. “If I only study, I don’t think I’ll get the full experience”, she says. The same goes for Mikołaj, a member of the Erasmus Debating Society. However, although he joined for the debating, the people are now the main reason he’s there.
Looking back on her first year, Daneesha recalls that she didn’t hesitate to join her study association. She was, however, worried about the time commitment. Did she ultimately manage to balance her studies with her membership? “I choose not to comment on this question,” she responds, laughing.
Unfortunately, joining an association isn’t an option for everyone. Teodora still lives with her parents in Eindhoven and would find it difficult to combine commuting and studying with an association. That’s why she’s currently looking for volunteer work in Eindhoven, for example at UNICEF.
