I Love Hobbies: For Florian, playing the piano is existential

What do students do once they put their study books aside or staff after leaving their offices? Master student Florian Gronauer can’t imagine his life without the piano. For him, the instrument brings joy, friends and connection.

“The piano got me through some very tough times”, says Florian, sitting behind the piano on the ground floor of the Mandeville building. “I felt quite isolated at times during my bachelor, but becoming part of a musical community in Rotterdam was my way of breaking free.” Florian obtained his bachelor’s in Munich and did an exchange in Rotterdam. He fell in love with the city and knew he wanted to come back to do his masters. “I’ve met so many friends here through music.”

Florian is no stranger to the piano. His parents started his musical career at the age of two when they put him on rhythmic clapping. At eight years old, Florian started playing the piano. He loves the percussive sound of the keyboard instrument: “It brings me back to the seventies or eighties, when you would hear those classic piano riffs cut through the mix of some banging songs like I’m Still Standing from Elton John or My Life by Billie Joel.”

How important is the piano to Florian? “Existential!”
