EM TV newsflash: Expensive rooms, Servant-Miklos wins Education Prize and public transport strike

Every Monday, an overview of the most important news from Erasmus University. This week: eight out of ten rooms in Rotterdam are too expensive, Ginie Servant-Miklos wins the Education Prize, international students bring money in and there will be a public transport strike on Wednesday.

On average, students in Rotterdam pay 250 euros too much for their student room. It is even worse in Amsterdam: 97 per cent of students there pay too much, averaging as much as 421 euros more than is allowed under the points system. Rotterdam municipality is a positive exception, however: it is one of the few that actively intervenes against high prices.

Lecturer Ginie Servant-Miklos of the ESSB has won the university’s annual Education Prize at the Opening of the Academic Year. Among other things, she founded the Bildung Climate School, an educational programme for secondary vocational, higher professional and university students, through which she teaches students how to take effective action against the climate crisis.

European students are good for the economy, the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis calculated. In the end, a European student brings in around 82 thousand euros more than they cost. European students at universities of applied sciences contribute a net 13 thousand euros to the public purse.

And on Wednesday, the unions will strike over cuts to social security. As a result, no trains, trams, buses or metro services will run, which may make it difficult to get to class. Teaching will continue, but may sometimes take place online.
