Parents full of emotion when dropping their children off at Eurekaweek
When registering for the Eurekaweek on Sunday, it is not only students you see around campus, but also their parents. What will they miss now that their children are leaving home?
Not all first-year students register independently at the Theil Building on Sunday. Some parents bring their child to campus, sometimes even from another continent. Some do it because they live far away, while others come along because it is a milestone for them too. At the thought of Zoë – who is about to study history – entering a new phase of life, her mother becomes emotional. “I’m trying not to think about it too much right now.”
Missing each other
Igor is about to study at Erasmus University College and arrives on campus today with his parents and younger sister. “I’m going to miss my family”, he says. “And the washing machine and dishwasher too.” His parents say they will miss him as well. “Igor is sporty and we often exercise together, so I’m going to miss doing that together”, says his father.
What will the parents not miss? “That he empties the fridge”, says Igor’s mother. “And that I’ll be able to walk around the house in peace without being called a fatso”, laughs Floris’s father.
