EM TV newsflash: ESL PhD candidate loses court case, shorter academic year for law students and internationals scammed more often
Every Monday, an overview of the most important news about Erasmus University. This week: PhD candidate Ahmed Maged lost a lawsuit against the university and will not get his position back at the Erasmus School of Law (ESL).
Maged, an Egyptian with Palestinian roots, demanded a different promotor after his supervisor signed a letter saying that the accusation of genocide against Israel was completely unacceptable. The university denied Maged’s request for a different promotor because, according to the university, the open letter fell under the freedom of speech. Maged didn’t want to continue with the supervisor and so his contract was not extended. He appealed the decision, but the judge has now sided with the university.
Also, bachelor students at ESL are unhappy with their shorter academic year. They say it leads to more study pressure. Staff report they do appreciate the change. And internationals students are more often the victims of housing scams, the Dutch National Student Union reports. They want universities to do more to protect students.
