Low-stimulation bar experience on the rise: ‘It’s nice not to have to yell over Katy Perry for once’

A bar without music, crowds, or noise. As part of the Student Wellbeing Week, visitors to the Smitse could enjoy a low-stimulation bar experience last Monday. Is this really something students want?

“It’s nice to be in a bar for once without having to yell over Katy Perry”, says third-year IBCoM student Isha. The idea of going out without all the sensory stimulation appeals to her: “Sometimes after a long day of classes, I want to grab a beer, but I quickly get overstimulated by the crowds.”

Not everyone wants a bar without an atmosphere: “I would never go to a low-stimulus bar on my own”, says Sarah, a master’s student in Behavioural Economics. “I go to the bar to see my friends. Music or no music.”
