The grants have been awarded to Anne Gielen, professor of Economics, for her research into breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty. The other grant goes to Yuk Hui, professor of Philosophy, who will conduct research under the title: Technodiversity: A new lens on AI.
The Vici grant, worth up to 1.5 million euros, is intended for ‘very experienced’ scientists. The funding enables them to further expand their research group and carry out innovative research.

10 per cent awarded

In total, NWO has awarded Vici grants to 39 leading researchers across the Netherlands. VU Amsterdam, Delft and Wageningen each secured the highest number of grants, with four each.

Of the 384 preliminary applications NWO received for the 2025 Vici round, 10 per cent will be awarded funding – 2 percentage points fewer than last year. Eighteen grants go to women and 21 to men.
The Vici grants, together with the Veni and Vidi grants, are part of the NWO Talent Programme. They are intended for scientists at different stages of their careers.
