EM TV newsflash: two years wait for medical internship, lay-offs at RSM and shortage of 20,000 student rooms.

Every Monday, an overview of the most important news from Erasmus University. This week: Medical students sometimes have to wait two years to start their internship and are willing to pay other students thousands of euros to start earlier. The Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) scraps 10 per cent of the jobs after a reorganisation and there’s a national shortage of 20,000 student rooms.

Desperate medical students are offering each other money to start their internships sooner. Some were very unlucky in the allocation lottery in August and have to wait two years to start their mandatory medical internship. Students with earlier spots are selling their positions.

Also, the RSM is moving forward with ten per cent fewer staff. About eighty full-time jobs at the RSM are being cut due to severe financial problems, sixty-five of them are already gone.

And there’s are 20.000 student rooms too few in the Netherlands. Rotterdam is one of the cities with the biggest housing shortages.
