How can you, as an international student, become a true Rotterdammert? International cuisine is an important part of the city. The pom sandwich, for example, has become an integral part of the Kruiskade. But how did the famous dish find its way to Rotterdam?

Pom is Suriname’s national dish. In Rotterdam, the chicken and tayer root casserole is often eaten in a sandwich and omnipresent on the West-Kruiskade. Reporter Saskia Electra meets journalist Sharyfah Bhageloe at De Kade restaurant. Bhageloe researched the origins of the iconic dish. She also meets Glenda van Duivenvoorde, owner of catering company Kukru Basi. Van Duivenvoorde teaches Saskia how to make an authentic pom and talks about the dish’s cultural significance.
