Looking for Woudestein’s wildlife with nature expert Jacob Molenaar
If you walk around the Woudestein campus you will easily come across more than fifty plant and animal species, knows nature expert and former student Jacob Molenaar. Together with Molenaar, EM searched for what crawls, grows, swims and flies on Woudestein. “I wish students could see how much life there is.”
Molenaar, who obtained his master’s in Economics two years ago, recognises nearly 5,000 animal species. His love of nature was instilled in him at an early age. “My father was crazy about mammals. He used to take me into the woods in search of game and predators.” Molenaar’s own great love is for birds: “I grew up in Alblasserdam where there is little forest. As a kid, I cycled into the polder in search of nature. You quickly end up with birds.”
Molenaar is pleased that Erasmus University is taking part in the Biodiversity Challenge, a competition between universities and colleges to map as much nature on campuses as possible: “When I was studying here, I had the impression that I was the only one who paid attention to nature. I hope students will pay a little more attention to all the life on campus.”
Erasmus University took part in the Biodiversity Challenge: a competition between colleges and universities to see which managed to register the most animal and plant species on waarneming.nl. That is an international platform that nature lovers and ecologists use to map the nature around them. Molenaar is a validator on waarneming.nl; he checks whether incoming reports are correct.
