How to become a Rotterdammert: Defne learns slang phrases: ‘Tebbie nou op je muil?’
What are the most important phrases to know in the Rotterdam dialect? Defne has been living in the city for one and a half years, and wants to become a real Rotterdammert by learning key slang terms from expert Roel Pot.
Roel organises courses in the Rotterdam dialect. Sitting in a spacious study room at the EUC, he starts off with a little introduction to swearingst. “We have three diseases we always use: tering, tyfus, and pleuris.” Defne practises some phrases after learning: “Tebbie nou op je muil?”
While enjoying a beer in café Bokaal, the Rotterdammert explains his love for the city. “I love Rotterdam”, he says. “When I was born, it was ugly, but then you learn to defend it.” For Roel, being a Rotterdammert means being proud, always. “I can say it’s a shitty city, but if you say it, you lose your teeth.”
