How to become a Rotterdammert: Defne cheers for Sparta at Het Kasteel
How do you become a Rotterdammert as an international student? Defne has been living in the city for one and a half years and discovers the football culture of Rotterdam by attending a Sparta Rotterdam home match with Djeramy, a generational Sparta superfan.
“I was actually born into this”, says Djeramy in his house before the match, while he shows his extensive collection of Sparta merch. “When my dad found out I was going to be a boy, the first thing he did was call the Sparta child’s fan club and say: ‘ Yo, I’m having a son. I want him to be a member already.’”
On the way to stadium Het Kasteel, Djeramy teaches Defne the Sparta Marsch. “We sing it before the match, and we sing it when we score.” The practice came in useful, because Sparta won the match against FC Volendam 2-0.
“I actually do feel more of a Rotterdammer”, comments Defne after the match. “S-P-A-R-T-A!”
