Campus Talk: ‘A vegan diet is good for the environment, but I don’t think all employees will be too happy’

No beef, milk or pork in staff lunches paid for by the university is a first step towards the goal of a vegan campus, which is supposed to be achieved by 2030. While some think it’s a great way to help the environment, others believe it deprives the university community of a choice.

The new policy affects only EUR staff. There’s a general agreement among staff that vegan lunches are a great initiative, especially when it comes to official events, says Guido Berens, an assistant professor at the RSM. However, Sofie van Hattem believes that not all employees will be happy with the new policy and it will take time to get used to it.

Maura, a Communication and Media student, is in favour of an all-vegan campus, as ‘meat is one of the leading causes of the climate crisis’, while Psychology student Rux thinks veganism should not be enforced.

Regardless of whether someone supports the vegan campus or not, staff and students agree that the vegan menu at the university should be improved. “Right now, it’s not really possible to eat a good vegan diet on campus.”
