However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s opening ceremony will be very different from most years’. There will be an online talk show on the subject of Making Minds Matter. You can view the talk show starting from 3pm, although you will have to sign up in advance to do so. Guests will include Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb, EUR Chief Diversity Officer Semiha Denktas, developmental psychologist Eveline Crone and neuroepidemiologist Arfan Ikram. The new president of the university’s executive board, Ed Brinksma, will attend the proceedings for the first time.
Another thing that is becoming a tradition in the first week of the new academic year is a protest action. This year’s protest action will take the form of a cycling tour. All over the Netherlands academics plan to get on their bikes and visit the campuses of various Dutch universities. They are doing so to raise awareness of the fact that many academics are only offered temporary contracts. Erasmus University, too, will be visited as part of one such tour. Participants in that tour will ride from Leiden University to Delft University of Technology, and from there to the Woudestein Campus, where they are expected to arrive at 2pm.
Other things to do this week:
ESN Tuesdays, the weekly drinks session for international students, will resume this week. ESN-Rotterdam will host a coronavirus-proof drinks night at Café de Beurs on Tuesday, 1 September, between 8pm and 1am.
Furthermore, the Erasmus Gallery has reopened its doors. Its new exhibition, Welcome Back, is all about reunions. It features works from the university’s own art collection which were absent for a while, either to be displayed elsewhere or to be restored. The exhibition will be able to be seen at the Gallery inside the Erasmus Building starting from 31 August. The gallery is open between 9am and 6pm on weekdays.
On the agenda In this weekly feature, EM will list all the events being organised that week for EUR students or staff. If you want your open-to-everyone party, lecture or event to be featured here, please shoot an email to [email protected].
