“It looks as if it was a tragic accident,” according to a police spokesperson. The accident took place at around 19.30 on the zebra crossing by the exit of the campus, in the direction of the Kralingse Zoom metro stop. The police are now calling for witnesses.
In a press statement, the police said that the 27-year-old man was wearing dark clothes. As a result, the driver of the car had probably not seen him. “Weather conditions were poor at the time of the accident.”
Not the first time
The impact caused serious damage to the windscreen and bonnet of the car. The trauma team provided first aid at the site of the accident. “Ambulance paramedics took the seriously injured victim to the hospital. Currently, the victim’s condition is unchanged,” according to the police spokesperson on Thursday morning.
This is not the first time that accidents have occurred near campus involving pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road. Last summer, a food delivery employee died following an accident on Burgemeester Oudlaan. On Monday afternoon, 11 November, a cyclist was injured following a collision level with the crossing at Excelsior station. In December, a cyclist crossing the Kralingse Zoom was hit.
