‘The scale of abuse in the Catholic Church was unimagineable’
Philosopher Paul van Geest believes that everyone should recognize how structural the sexual abuse was in the Catholic Church. He spoke about the scandal in talkshow Studio Erasmus.
In Studio Erasmus, host Geert Maarse spoke with philosopher Paul van Geest (author of, among others, the book Catholicism in Europe) about the recent Vatican summit on abuse scandals and the power struggle between the popular Pope Francis and conservative forces within the church. “Between 2 and 4 percent of all clergy in the church have abused children, it is almost impossible to imagine”, Van Geest said.
