Olympic rowing champion Maaike Head retires

Olympic rowing champion and Skadi member Maaike Head wants to focus on her career and is putting away her (competitive) oars, reports De Volkskrant.
Head is hoping to train as a surgeon at VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam, a career which is impossible to combine with top sport. “It feels strange. Since Rio, I finally know what’s required to row fast. But this is something I have to do, she told the newspaper.
Gold in Rio
The Skadi rower is now 33 and won a gold medal with Ilse Paulis in the lightweight double sculls at the Rio Olympics. It was the first rowing gold for the Netherlands since 2008. Before the Games, they became European champions and set a world record. They also won the title ‘Sports Team of the Year 2016’.
