Woudestein campus to get green roofs

Wethouder Pex Langenberg en collegevoorzitter Kristel Baele.
In the course of the next few years, 10,000 square meters of green roofs will be constructed on the Woudestein campus. The plan was laid down by the President of the Executive Board, Kristel Baele, in an agreement with the City of Rotterdam on Monday.
By constructing the green roofs, which will be about the size of two football fields, the university is playing its part in making the city climate proof. These will not be the first green roofs on campus: the Theil Building and the Van der Goot Building both have a natural roof. In total, there are now 220,000 square meters of green roof space across Rotterdam.
The following buildings will get a green roof: University Library (2017), Sanders BuildingĀ (2017), Tinbergen Building (2019), Van der Goot Building (2019), Erasmus Building (2018), Bayle Building (2018-2019), and the new sports building (2018-2019).
Relief for sewage system
Green roofs retain water longer, which provides welcome relief for the sewage system. They also insulate well, give the surroundings a greener appearance and extend the service life of the roof.
It has not yet been announced which buildings will be getting a green roof. Construction is scheduled to take place between 2017 and 2019. The ultimate aim is for all campus buildings to have a roof garden.
