Today is National Coming Out Day which is a holiday aimed to raise awareness for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community. It also enhances an open mind towards sexual diversity. Today Erasmus Pride, the network for the LGBT community at EU, hosts several activities at Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam from 13:00 onwards.
Providing an open environment
“Both the university as well as Erasmus Pride find it important to offer an environment where students and employees can be themselves”, says Natascha Sprado Secretary of Erasmus Pride. “By participating in the National Coming Out Day we show that we indeed, want and can provide this setting”, adds Fanny Franken, Vice President of Erasmus Pride.
Activities in the city center
In collaboration with various other organizations Erasmus Pride hosts several activities at the Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam from 13:00 till 17:00. Among the activities are speed dating and a game called ‘catching the odd man out.’ Finally, Erasmus Pride will answering questions and providing information at an information desk.
International importance
The National Coming Out Day is celebrated worldwide. “Because coming out is not a worldwide self-evident right, it is important to draw attention to it”, says Sprado. Franken adds, “this especially counts for international students in Rotterdam.” Erasmus Pride wants students from all nationalities and backgrounds to be able to be themselves. NdB
