International master students at Erasmus MC cannot believe their luck: They have gotten their own beautiful apartments located at five minutes from their lecture halls, at 450 euro per month.

Prem Basel cannot believe his luck.

This is the medical faculty’s answer to last year’s housing crisis. The faculty has rented an entire floor with thirteen apartments at the Gravendijkwal, of housing corporation Stadswonen.

“There was a little bit of a crisis last year”, dean Huib Pols of Erasmus MC said during the house warming on 17 September. “Therefore we wanted to do things better this year.”

Prem Basel (23) is an epidemiology student from Nepal. He is absolutely delighted with his new home. “I had seen some photos before I came, but it exceeded my expectations”, he says.

Erasmus MC itself organised the intakes with the students and took care of the interiors of the apartments, which allowed for the rents to remain relatively low. “However, per apartment we do have to add some money every month”, project manager Conny Demper explains. “It is a pilot project. If by next year we see the costs have risen too much, we will start adding those to the rent.”
