Journalistic code

Erasmus Magazine (EM) is Erasmus University’s independent news platform. The editorial team consists of professional journalists employed by the university. EM also works with freelance journalists, photographers, illustrators, and students.

The independent working methods of EM are determined by journalistic guidelines that are based on the NVJ Codethe Guidelines of the Netherlands Council for Journalism (Raad voor de Journalistiek) and the Global Charter of Ethics for Journalism.

Editorial Statute

EM has an Editorial Statute that sets out the position and role of EM and also establishes EM’s independent status. It also describes the tasks of the Editorial Board, which functions as a kind of Supervisory and Advisory Board and can also mediate in conflicts and complaints.

Policy on interviews and right of inspection

On the page How EM’s reporters conduct and publish interviews you can read everything about the rights and obligations of interviewees when they cooperate in an article or video for EM.

How EM deals with modifications to published articles

For EM, transparency and trustworthiness are of great importance. This applies to the creation of our articles and videos, and therefore also to making alterations to content on the website. Not only must our archive be a trustworthy reflection of what we have published, readers must also be able to trust that information on EM is not altered or removed under pressure from anyone. Of course, there may be a valid reason to make an alteration to the site, for example in the case of a factual inaccuracy. In the event of a significant change, the editors will always clearly indicate that an article has been amended after publication and, where possible, also why.

Why EM doesn’t (automatically) remove personal data from the site

EM regularly receives requests to remove a name or photograph from the website. In principle, EM isn’t required to comply with such requests. As a journalistic medium, EM can rely on the journalistic exception in the GDPR, as described by the Dutch Data Protection Authority.
Read more here about how EM handles this type of request.

AI policy

EM is currently working on rules and agreements regarding the use of AI. The guiding principle is that the greatest possible restraint is exercised in the use of AI tools. This article will be expanded in the near future with a concrete explanation of the applications used.
