Dutch Delight: Kroket<\/h2>\n

EM periodically tests typical Dutch foods with help of international students under the name of \u2018Dutch Delight\u2019. This edition, third year IBCoM student James Dooms from Cape Town, South Africa, tastes and reviews Kroket.\u00a0<\/b> The Review<\/b><\/p>\n

James meets me in the Albron cafeteria \u2018De Carrousel\u2019 in L-building around lunchtime. He has eaten Kroket before, and to him it\u2019s a typical dish from the Dutch snack cuisine: \u201cQuick to eat, deep fried, and not really healthy\u201d.<\/p>\n

He admits he got discouraged to eat Kroket after hearing rumors about the filling of the snack. This rumor tells that it contains a bunch of leftover meats and bones. James: \u201cThis could be from anything really\u201d. Having the recent horsemeat scandal in mind, anything seems possible \u2013 though there\u2019s no piece of evidence that says this could be the case at Albron on campus.<\/p>\n

James slices the Kroket in two halfs, puts it on a Ciabatta bun, and adds the mustard. His review is anything, but positive: \u201cThe Kroket tastes like it\u2019s being out for a while, the bread is hard and tastes old, and the mustard adds mere flavor\u201d. He grades the Kroket with a final mark of 1,5 star out of 5 stars. James: \u201cI probably wouldn\u2019t eat the Kroket here anymore\u201d. <\/p>\n

The Product<\/b><\/p>\n

Kroket is a typical deep fried snack with a crispy crust and a soft filling. The filling is prepared of thick ragout containing either a mix of meat and vegetables or exclusively vegetables, depending on whether you eat the vegetarian Kroket or not. A typical Belgian version is a Kroket with a filling of melted cheese. A Kroket typically is being consumed either alone, on a bun, or with fries. One has to keep in mind that the filling is warm much longer than the crust when eating a Kroket. LJa<\/p>\n

2= If you bought it anyway, eat it, why not?<\/p>\n

3= Quite nice actually<\/p>\n
