According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/monitor.lnvh.nl\/\">2018 Women Professors Monitor<\/a>, the share of chairs currently occupied by women stands at 13 percent. At Erasmus MC, the figure is currently 20.8 percent. EUR has set a target of 20 percent as of year-end 2020. It\u2019s as if women \u2013 and men too, those who don\u2019t fit in the \u2018ideal academic\u2019 category \u2013 have to work extra hard to prove themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her study Van Helden will be focussing on the position of associate professors. \u201cWe want to gain insight into the barriers. What do they run into on their path towards a professorship?\u201d explains Van Helden. \u201cParticularly in academia, which is a very individualistic and competitive environment, it\u2019s important to determine whether they have access to the right people and the right tools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018The one-sided view of the ideal academic has masculine connotations.\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stereotyping<\/h2><p>\u201cThe main research question in this study is: how can we explain the differences in opportunities for men and women at the sub-senior level (associate professor) to move up to a senior position (professor) in the academic sector?\u201d explains Van Helden.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More on female professors<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2018\/06\/14\/ese-en-rsm-hebben-minste-vrouwelijke-hoogleraren\/\">ESE and RSM have the lowest number of female professors<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2018\/04\/18\/we-zitten-allemaal-achter-dezelfde-vrouwen-aan\/\">\u2018We are all chasing the same women\u2019<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2015\/11\/19\/deja-vu-nog-steeds-weinig-vrouwelijke-profs\/\">D\u00e9j\u00e0 vu: There is still a dearth of female professors<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>To find out, the researcher will be selecting 65 to 70 associate professors \u2013 both male and female \u2013 taken from all EUR\u2019s faculties. She will proceed to monitor these lecturers for at least three years. \u201cHopefully the EUR faculties will all be prepared to cooperate. This will allow us to examine to which extent culture and institutional aspects co-determine an individual\u2019s development opportunities,\u201d she explains. \u201cI\u2019ll also be looking into social aspects: to whom can the associate professors turn when they have a question or idea; who can help them move forward and how does this line of communication run exactly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are many factors that can slow down an academic\u2019s progress, says Van Helden. One often-heard example is stereotyping. \u201cWomen are often unable to satisfy the stereotypical biases,\u201d she explains. \u201cAn associate professor generally fulfils a rather important leadership role within the organisation. But leadership is often described by referring to allegedly \u2018masculine\u2019 qualities like authority and courage.\u201d In other words, there are already a lot of preconceived notions based on cultural value \u2013 ideas that make it harder for women to conform to expectations. \u201cOf course, this stereotype forms an obstacle for anyone who doesn\u2019t identify with these biases, but doubly so for women,\u201d adds Van Helden.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the right direction<\/h2><p>\u201cI could already see this imbalance as a student,\u201d says Van Helden, who has both a bachelor degree in Public Administration and a master degree in HR &amp; Management from EUR. \u201cI saw next to no women academics in leading positions. The literature we read was often written by men, and the examples that were offered were all \u2018male\u2019 case studies. This distorts the picture for students and reinforces the stereotype of the ideal academic.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More on women in science<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2016\/10\/27\/kristel-baele-a-quota-is-not-far-away\/\">Kristel Baele: \u201cA quota is not far away\u201d<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2016\/03\/08\/het-probleem-zit-bij-ons-allemaal-niet-alleen-bij-witte-mannen\/\">&#8216;The problem lies with all of us, not just with white males&#8217;<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2017\/12\/14\/monitor-women-in-science-are-missing-out-on-dozens-of-millions-of-euros\/\">Monitor: \u2018Women in science are missing out on dozens of millions of euros\u2019<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Generally speaking, things are moving in the right direction, according to Van Helden. In the 1990s, only 5 percent of the associate professors nationwide were women, and only 3 percent of the professors. Today these figures are 30 percent and 21 percent respectively. \u201cNevertheless, there\u2019s still an imbalance,\u201d notes Van Helden. That\u2019s why she believes that the university\u2019s decision to back this study is a very positive sign. \u201cIt shows that they\u2019ve also acknowledged that something needs to be done about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Helden expects to be able to present the results in four years\u2019 time. While she\u2019s performing her research under the aegis of ESSB\u2019s Public Administration department, the idea was actually hatched within the Executive Board of Erasmus MC. \u201cAt Erasmus MC, there\u2019s a high intake of female students, but very few of academics stay on. So they\u2019re very interested in finding out how to retain talented women for science,\u201d she continues. \u201cAnd the diversity office is involved in this research too. They\u2019ve been studying this subject for some time now, so I\u2019ll be able to learn from their experiences. This also creates broader support for the study itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Awareness<\/h2><p>The initial goal of Van Helden\u2019s research is to raise awareness \u2013 at both the individual and institutional levels. \u201cI hope that we can step out of our own little bubbles and look at what we can do to create equal opportunities,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard a striking quote the other day, during the Women in Leadership Conference organised by ECWO: \u2018Women are invited to the party but are not asked to dance.\u2019 I think this is the point that we\u2019ve arrived at right now,\u201d she continues. \u201cNow\u2019s the time to set things in motion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/persons\" class=\"mt-6 md:mt-8 lg:mt-10\"
