Dutch Delight: Roggebrood<\/h2>\n

Periodically, EM tests typical Dutch foods together with internationals from EUR. This edition of Dutch Delight, third year IBA student Ana Fajardo from Spain tastes and reviews \u2018roggebrood\u2019 [Rye bread].<\/b>The Review<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThis looks amazing!\u201d \u2013 says Ana sarcastically while opening the box of roggebrood. The product indeed might not look that appealing to eat, as it is a very dark type of bread, and gives the impression of anything but a light meal ahead of you. \u201cIt looks like it\u2019s going to taste bitter\u201d, Ana remarks.<\/p>\n

It turns out to taste better than Ana thought beforehand, though she\u2019s still\u00a0not too enthusiastic about the bread: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have much taste, but it\u2019s certainly not bitter. The bread is really soft, and it\u2019s wet, kind of.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a few bites, the taste gets a bit more outspoken \u2013 probably from the grains in the bread. Ana: \u201cI definitely prefer normal bread. The taste of this roggebrood is far from sophisticated, and also the texture is very different from the bread I\u2019m used to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it a really healthy bread?\u201d, Ana asks. \u201cIt tastes like it\u2019s really healthy. It\u2019s such a heavy bread and it tastes a bit salty. I could never eat this with Nutella for example.\u201d All in all, Ana grants it two out of five stars. Her assessment: it\u2019s not gross, but I would not recommend this bread.<\/p>\n

The Product<\/b><\/p>\n

Roggebrood is a very nutritious type of bread, and used to be the main component of a typical meal for most people in The Netherlands \u2013 next to potatoes, of course. However, in later years, the bread lost popularity. Traditionally, it is being eaten with cheese or along a pea soup dish. Roughly, Dutch distinguish two types of roggebrood: Brabants or Fries [Frisian] \u2013 Ana has tasted the latter one.<\/p>\n
