Two EUR students <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/04\/10\/student-organisations-should-not-invite-climate-deniers-to-debate\/\">denounced the participation of Forum voor Democratie leader and \u2018climate denier\u2019 Thierry Baudet<\/a><\/u>, a position that seemed to <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/04\/11\/if-societal-issues-should-be-debated-anywhere-it-is-at-universities\/\">divide the Erasmus student population in two camps<\/a><\/u>. But this is a rather strange setting,\u201d says Dilan Ye\u015filg\u00f6z, who serves as a Member of Parliament and climate spokesperson for the VVD. She\u2019s referring to the fact that the debate organised by In Duplo has been thrown off course by Thierry Baudet\u2019s denial of human-caused climate change.<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018You want to hear arguments \u2013 a fair and open debate. Without TV stations becoming involved\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"flex mt-6 image:rounded-full image:max-w-[4.375rem] gap-2\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"mt-[1px]\">&ndash;<\/span>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-lg font-tiempos-headline\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFormer prime minister Jan-Peter Balkenende\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>Despite previously telling the daily <em>De Telegraaf<\/em> that this is precisely why he had no desire to debate Baudet, transition professor Jan Rotmans nevertheless picked up the gauntlet. First, each of the three speakers was given 15 minutes to make their point, after an introduction by former Prime Minister Jan-Peter Balkenende. After briefly explaining why this is such an urgent topic to reflect on (\u2018Ice sheets as large as Manhattan are melting. The Netherlands is trailing behind as a country \u2013 what\u2019s our role, who will be solving it, and how?\u2019), Balkenende addressed two students sitting almost at the front. \u201cI\u2019m curious to hear what you expect of this evening. You want to hear arguments \u2013 a fair and open debate. Without the TV stations becoming involved.\u201d Moderator Steven van Eijck had made a similar point: by asking the live media to stay away, the organisers hoped the debate would centre on substance rather than spectacle.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geopolitical<\/h2><p>Rotmans shared this hope. He presented a clear case for the need to make the energy transition: the key motivating factors aren\u2019t the environment, but rather changing geopolitical relationships and the economy. According to him, since Trump took office, there has never been so much investment in wind and solar power in the US. Another interesting fact: \u201cIn the Netherlands, 80 percent of our emissions come from companies. And within this group, 80 percent are actually released by a mere 10 companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s his take on climate sceptics, a student wanted to know. \u201cAs if you\u2019re fighting a boxing match in two different arenas. How could you even hit each other? You don\u2019t put something like gravity up for discussion either.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018As if you\u2019re fighting a boxing match in two different arenas. How could you even hit each other? You don\u2019t put something like gravity up for discussion either\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"flex mt-6 image:rounded-full image:max-w-[4.375rem] gap-2\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"mt-[1px]\">&ndash;<\/span>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-lg font-tiempos-headline\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJan Rotmans\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Baudet, modern-day &#039;Galileo&#039;<\/h2><p>In her contribution, MP Dilan Ye\u015filg\u00f6z\u2019s (VVD) emphasised the economic impact of the climate transition, \u2018which is going to make us a lot of money\u2019. Which is why \u2018we\u2019 need to \u2018do it the Dutch way\u2019 and strive to operate at the forefront of innovation and new solutions. She concluded by remarking, \u201cI know the moderator doesn\u2019t want me to say it, but I feel like an intermezzo between two squabbling gentlemen.\u201d She sat herself down with a grin amid enthusiastic applause.<\/p>\n<p>When Baudet entered the arena, students pulled out their phones to take pictures. You could sense this is what people had come for. He kicked off with a story about the existential crisis that people have been plunged in after doing away with God. Climate change is a new religion \u2013 one that comes complete with a biblical flood. \u201cI\u2019ve been branded a heretic!\u201d He compared himself to Galileo, who also went against the grain. The audience tittered.<\/p>\n<p>A student asked him whether it made any sense to invest in education if you can reject scientific findings at whim. According to Baudet, it is far from certain that a majority of scientists agree on the causes of climate change.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Climate Mafia\u2019<\/h2><p>After this, it\u2019s time for debate. Rotmans doesn\u2019t mince words: \u201cEverything you just said is incorrect. I believe this is dangerous, but I also find it irresponsible.\u201d Baudet: \u201cThese are the familiar lies of the climate Mafia.\u201d Ye\u015filg\u00f6z: \u201cThierry, attend a debate every now and then; read an article or two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Baudet, the energy transition won\u2019t be as profitable as it\u2019s made out to be. \u201cIt\u2019s bullshit, plain and simple. Why would we need laws and subsidies otherwise?\u201d Ye\u015filg\u00f6z: \u201cA large number of companies are already earning millions in this sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Ignoring evidence\u2019<\/h2><p>The debate remains a clash between substance and knowledge vs. denial tactics, according to the students we speak with after the event. Business Economics and Economics student Freek had expected more from Baudet. \u201cHe blatantly ignored scientific evidence. I expected his contribution to be more substantive than this. But of course, he\u2019s a populist \u2013 he prefers to bend facts to his advantage.\u201d Freek agrees with Ye\u015filg\u00f6z that in terms of knowledge, the Netherlands should work to once again become a frontrunner.<\/p>\n<p>Economics and Fiscal Economics student Danique: \u201cIt turned out exactly as I expected. It\u2019s a pity that they couldn\u2019t really go into substantive issues. Terms like innovation were applied rather broadly. I did agree with inviting a climate denier \u2013 it gives you a chance to hear a range of opinions.\u201d She gets why people are susceptible to Baudet\u2019s act: \u201cHe\u2019s a good talker. At that point it doesn\u2019t matter whether the science is right \u2013 Trump is another example. Incidentally, Forum voor Democratie make good points too \u2013 although their position on climate change isn\u2019t one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018He\u2019s a good talker. Macy: \u201cI came here without any expectations, but it proved very educational.\u201d Marinka is off to give Balkenende three kisses. Carmen says that despite everything, Baudet impressed her: \u201cNot in terms of substance, but he does have charisma.
