All the students in the reasonably drab corridors of the student flat in Zocherstraat, Rotterdam-Oost say hi to us. I honestly can\u2019t live without a big desk.\u201d So how much time does she spend in her room, anyway? \u201cWell, only a few hours a day in certain weeks, and when I\u2019m asleep. Twice a week I\u2019ll train with the EUR Roadrunners (the students\u2019 athletics club \u2013 ed.). She is on the Public Health committee of the International Federation of Medical Students\u2019 Associations Rotterdam (IFMSA-Rotterdam) study society. \u201cWe recruit donors, but we also organise the \u2018Teddy Bear Hospital\u2019, which allows children to take a look inside a hospital. In short, we do a little bit of everything. But I also attend the party nights organised by MFVR (Rotterdam Faculty of Medicine Student Society \u2013 ed.), so basically, I\u2019m having it both ways.\u201d In addition, Hannah spends two or three afternoons per month at Sophia Children\u2019s Hospital, helping doctors conduct a study on intestinal failure. \u201cFirst I\u2019ll collect data at the outpatients\u2019 clinic, then I\u2019ll process it in the lab later that afternoon.\u201d Furthermore, she has a \u2018regular\u2019 part-time job. Isn\u2019t that a recipe for a burnout? Hannah doesn\u2019t seem too concerned about the risk of getting burnt out. \u201cIt\u2019s a subject that is discussed at the department with increasing regularity. The percentage of students suffering from burnout is very high among medical students.\u201d It is to be hoped that the new generation of doctors will be spared this fate. \u201cBefore last summer I quit doing gymnastics, for the first time in twelve years. I knew I\u2019d have to make some sacrifices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She looks around at the large number of medals hanging on her wall. Most of them were awarded after gymnastics competitions, while the rest pertain to running. \u201cBut they\u2019re the kind of medals that mean, \u2018well, you took part\u2019.\u201d Among the ones that mean the most to her is the one she got after completing the Bruggenloop (Rotterdam Bridge Run), because the banks of the Meuse river are one of Hannah\u2019s favourite running routes. \u201cWhen you see the bridges, that\u2019s when you\u2019re really aware you live in a big city. Rotterdam is a place where ambitions and dreams can come true. That\u2019s the feeling you get when you\u2019re running alongside the river.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We hardly talk about her degree. Hannah simply says she is where she\u2019s supposed to be and she\u2019s doing just fine. \u201cWhat I really like about this degree programme is that we\u2019re still active in the same study group, and we really do help each other. For example, we\u2019ll give each other study tips, or we\u2019ll support our fellow students when they get really nervous about attending dissection classes. The number of students who drop out is very low here, but people are occasionally unsure they\u2019ve made the right choice.
